Abstract will shut down on December 15, 2026, urging users to bridge out assets as Igloo redirects funding toward Pudgy Penguins and PENGU.

Pudgy Penguins' Ethereum Network Abstract to Shut Down Dec 15

TL;DR

  • Abstract will cease operations and shut down its Ethereum Layer 2 network on December 15, 2026.

  • Users must bridge assets off the network before the deadline or risk losing access to their funds.

  • The project cited stagnant growth, thin liquidity, a restricted DeFi ecosystem, and limited institutional adoption.

  • Igloo will redirect resources toward Pudgy Penguins and PENGU after deciding against an Abstract token launch.

Abstract, the consumer-focused Ethereum Layer 2 network backed by Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo Inc., will shut down on December 15, 2026, after concluding that its standalone business model is unsustainable.

The project announced the decision Tuesday, citing stagnant growth, limited liquidity, a restricted decentralized finance ecosystem, and weak institutional adoption.

Abstract warned users to bridge their assets off the network before the shutdown date or risk losing access to their funds.

Consumer Partnerships Failed to Sustain the Network

Abstract said more than 144 applications had been deployed on its network and over 400,000 users had been onboarded through consumer partnerships involving brands such as Red Bull Racing and Disney.

Despite that reach, the project said changes in the industry had undermined the viability of operating a blockchain focused exclusively on consumer crypto.

The announcement highlights the gap between attracting users and sustaining the liquidity, application activity, and adoption needed to support an independent network.

Abstract’s difficulties ultimately led its backer to reconsider the financial commitment required to keep the chain operating.

Igloo Redirects Funding Toward Pudgy Penguins and PENGU

Igloo CEO Luca Netz said the company had funded Abstract for the past 18 months, losing tens of millions of dollars in the process.

Igloo will now direct its resources toward Pudgy Penguins and its associated PENGU token.

The company raised more than $11 million in July 2024 in a funding round led by Founders Fund to develop Abstract. Its strategy was to use Pudgy Penguins’ distribution to introduce consumers to onchain applications.

Abstract launched its mainnet in January 2025. Its planned closure will come less than two years after that launch.

Netz said Igloo decided against continuing to finance the network at the expense of the Pudgy Penguins business.

Netz said Igloo considered its options after the losses but chose not to launch an Abstract token or pursue an initial coin offering.

He argued that a token needs underlying demand and that issuing one without confidence in its prospects would have been a disservice to the community.

The decision means Abstract will wind down rather than attempt to raise additional funding through a token sale.

Netz also expressed disappointment that the project had not succeeded, while defending the ambition behind entering the blockchain infrastructure business. He said his regret was being unable to share a successful outcome with the Abstract community.

Users Face December 15 Asset Withdrawal Deadline

The immediate priority for Abstract users is moving their assets off the chain before December 15.

The project explicitly warned that users who fail to bridge out before the shutdown could lose access to their funds.

The announcement follows weeks of speculation about Abstract’s future. Community concerns had centered on reduced activity from its official account, reported departures of two senior team members in August, and scrutiny of developer wallet activity.

Abstract’s decision also comes less than a week after Paradigm-backed Ethereum Layer 2 Blast announced plans to wind down because its costs exceeded revenue.

The two announcements underline the financial challenges facing networks that struggle to turn adoption into sustainable operations.
