Coinbase Rolls Out Agentic Wallets
Coinbase, one of the leading cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, has launched Agentic Wallets, the first wallet infrastructure specifically designed for autonomous AI agents.
According to the crypto exchange, this new tool will empower AI gents to independently hold funds, send payments, trade tokens, earn yield, and transact onchain, with built-in security guardrails to prevent misuse, a
While commenting on this launch, Coinbase Developer Platform programmers Erik Reppel and Josh Nickerson said,
"AI agents are everywhere – answering questions, summarizing documents, and assisting with tasks. But today's agents hit a wall when they need to actually do something that requires money."
Cryptocurrency wallets have become the safest way to store cryptocurrencies, allowing users to manage their digital assets by securing their private keys.
Agentic Wallets builds on the x402 protocol that Coinbase is developing with other internet stakeholders to support autonomous crypto payments without human intervention.
This tool also builds on Coinbase’s previously released AgentKit tool that made it possible to embed wallets during agent creation. With Agentic Wallets, AI agents can have wallets and have the ability to transact on behalf of the users.
"Your agent detects a better yield opportunity at 3 am? It rebalances automatically, no approval needed because you’ve already set permissions and controls," Reppel and Nickerson added.
Coinbase pointed out that the new tool will initially support EVM chains and Solana, and can support gasless transactions on the Coinbase-incubated Base Layer 2.
Agentic Wallets also come with a command-line interface that allows users to check on their agent, fund their wallets, and deploy new skills with simple commands. Coinbase also launched an agent-wallet-skills repo to provide agents with basic commands.
According to Coinbase, this new tool features Smart Security Guardrails, like programmable spending limits, session caps, and other transaction controls.
The enclase isolation feature within the tool also ensures private keys remain in a secure Coinbase infrastructure, never exposed to the agent's prompt or LLM.
The developers added that,
“We're moving from AI agents that advise to agents that act. From assistants who suggest to helpers who execute. From tools that require constant human oversight to autonomous systems that operate independently within trusted guardrails.”
Coinbase has been expanding its product base in recent months. In January, Coinbase launched its prediction markets to all U.S. customers, allowing them to trade on the outcomes of real-world events, including elections, sports, collectibles, and economic indicators.
