Coinbase has secured U.K. regulatory approval to offer equities and derivatives alongside crypto, advancing its vision of becoming an "Everything Exchange" ahead of new crypto regulations.

Coinbase Wins U.K. Approval to Expand Into Equities and Derivatives Trading

TL;DR

  • Coinbase has secured regulatory approval in the U.K. to offer equities and derivatives alongside its crypto services.

  • The new license allows institutional clients to trade crypto, equity, and commodity perpetual futures, while retail users will gain access to stock trading.

  • The approval supports Coinbase's vision of becoming an "Everything Exchange" by expanding beyond digital assets.

Nasdaq-listed cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) has received regulatory approval in the United Kingdom to expand its platform beyond digital assets by offering equities and derivatives trading.

The new authorization allows Coinbase to broaden its financial services in one of its largest international markets, giving both institutional and retail customers access to a wider range of investment products.

The company announced the expansion in a blog post, describing it as another step toward building a comprehensive multi-asset trading platform.

Institutional and Retail Traders Gain New Investment Options

Under the newly granted license, institutional and advanced traders in the U.K. will be able to access cryptocurrency, equity, and commodity perpetual futures through Coinbase.

Retail customers will also benefit from the approval, gaining the ability to trade equities directly on Coinbase for the first time in the country.

The new authorization complements Coinbase's existing regulatory approvals, including its U.K. e-money license and Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) cryptoasset registration, which it obtained in February last year to provide crypto and fiat-related services.

The expansion follows Coinbase's broader strategy of introducing products that have already been rolled out in other international markets.

In the United States, Coinbase users can already trade stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) through the platform.

Eligible customers outside the U.S. also have access to USDC-settled stock perpetual futures tied to major publicly traded companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and Tesla.

The company has also announced plans to launch tokenized stocks for eligible international users. These digital assets will be backed one-to-one by U.S. equities, allowing investors to benefit from ownership rights, including dividend payments.

'Everything Exchange' Strategy Gains Momentum

The latest regulatory approval supports Coinbase's long-term ambition to become what it calls an "Everything Exchange."

Rather than focusing solely on cryptocurrencies, the company is expanding into multiple financial markets, including:

  • Equities

  • Crypto derivatives

  • Tokenized assets

  • Prediction markets

  • Consumer financial services

This diversified approach is designed to position Coinbase as a one-stop platform for both traditional and digital asset investing.

The approval comes ahead of the United Kingdom's comprehensive cryptocurrency regulatory framework, which is expected to come into force in October 2027.

By securing the necessary regulatory permissions now, Coinbase gains a clear pathway to broaden its offerings before the new framework is fully implemented.

The move also strengthens the company's competitive position in one of Europe's most important financial markets as demand for regulated digital asset services continues to grow.
