Coinbase renames the Base App to Coinbase Wallet, shifting toward self-custodial multichain trading, perpetual futures, and tokenized stocks.

Coinbase Ditches the Base App Name, Pivots Wallet to Multichain Trading

TL;DR

  • Coinbase is renaming the Base App back to Coinbase Wallet.

  • The self-custodial wallet is shifting its focus from social features to multichain trading.

  • Users can access Hyperliquid-powered perpetual futures, prediction markets and tokenized stocks.

  • Base will remain prominent, but the application will no longer be primarily Base-focused.

Coinbase is reversing last year’s Base App rebrand and restoring the Coinbase Wallet name as it shifts the self-custodial application toward trading and broader multichain access.

The renamed wallet will provide on-chain access to perpetual futures, prediction markets, tokenized stocks and newly launched cryptocurrencies. Coinbase said the Wallet name more accurately reflects the app’s role as the company’s self-custodial gateway to its planned “everything exchange.”

Coinbase Wallet Becomes Testing Ground for New Products

Ryan Kass, head of Coinbase Wallet Product, described the application as a “test kitchen” for assets and products that may not be available through Coinbase’s centralized exchange.

One early example is perpetual futures trading powered by Hyperliquid. The wallet will also support long-tail cryptocurrencies and plans to integrate additional blockchain networks as they launch.

Prediction markets and tokenized stocks are available alongside conventional cryptocurrency trading. Because transactions occur on-chain, users can also monitor other traders’ activity and potentially use those insights to inform their strategies.

Coinbase Wallet will remain self-custodial, meaning users retain control of their private keys and assets.

The company is marketing the product around rapid, borderless access without standard identity-verification requirements. However, certain services remain subject to geographic restrictions.

Assets become available automatically after they are minted on a supported blockchain. Coinbase Wallet will attempt to detect and conceal malicious or scam tokens, reducing the risk of users interacting with fraudulent assets.

New product categories, including prediction markets and tokenized equities, must undergo product and compliance reviews before they appear in the app.

Coinbase Reverses Base App Rebrand

Coinbase renamed Coinbase Wallet as the Base App in July 2025. At the time, the company positioned it as an all-in-one product combining social networking, messaging, payments, mini-apps and trading.

The social strategy did not produce the results Coinbase expected. CEO Brian Armstrong acknowledged in March that the experiment had fallen short and said the product was pivoting toward trading.

Base creator Jesse Pollak later made similar comments about its social and creator features. In July, he transferred leadership of the app to Jordan “Cobie” Fish as the company prepared to make the platform less focused on the Base blockchain.

Kass said the latest name change reflects Coinbase’s willingness to adjust its strategy. While the Base App represented a more narrowly defined experiment, Coinbase Wallet is designed to give users access to a broader range of on-chain financial products.

The rebranded wallet supports Base, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, and Avalanche.

It has also added Robinhood Chain and Monad, which were not previously included among the Base App’s supported networks. Coinbase plans to integrate more blockchains as its multichain trading strategy expands.

The broader network selection allows users to manage and trade assets across multiple ecosystems from one self-custodial interface.

Base Blockchain Retains Prominent Role

Despite the name change and multichain expansion, Base will remain a central part of Coinbase Wallet.

Trending Base-based assets will appear naturally within the app alongside tokens from other major blockchain networks. Coinbase believes this approach will improve discovery without restricting users to its proprietary ecosystem.

Coinbase generates revenue from trading and product fees within the wallet, although the company has not disclosed detailed fee information. It has also declined to say whether the trading-focused pivot has increased user numbers.
