BitGo secures South Korean VASP registration, enabling institutional crypto custody and transfer services with backing from Hana Financial and SK Telecom.

BitGo Becomes First Global Crypto Firm Licensed in South Korea

TL;DR

  • BitGo says it has become the first global cryptocurrency company to establish a new South Korean entity and obtain virtual asset service provider registration.

  • The approval allows BitGo Korea to provide digital asset custody and transfer services to institutional and enterprise clients.

  • Hana Financial Group and SK Telecom are strategic shareholders in BitGo Korea.

Cryptocurrency custody provider BitGo Holdings has secured regulatory approval to offer virtual asset services in South Korea, opening the door to institutional clients in one of the world’s most active digital asset markets.

The Korea Financial Intelligence Unit approved BitGo Korea’s registration as a virtual asset service provider, allowing the company to provide cryptocurrency custody and transfer services to institutional and enterprise customers.

BitGo said Wednesday that it is the first global digital asset company to establish a new South Korean entity and obtain the registration.

BitGo Korea Targets Institutional Custody Demand

The newly registered BitGo Korea division will focus on delivering regulated digital asset infrastructure to institutional investors and corporate clients.

The approval enables the company to safeguard and transfer virtual assets while operating under South Korea’s regulatory framework.

BitGo Managing Director Abel Seow said local institutions increasingly want infrastructure that combines robust security with domestic support and regulatory compliance.

“Korean institutions are looking for infrastructure that combines institutional-grade security with local support and regulatory alignment,” Seow said.

The company established BitGo Korea from the ground up, implementing local security procedures, anti-money laundering controls, and internal governance frameworks.

BitGo Korea is supported by strategic shareholders that include Hana Financial Group and SK Telecom.

Hana is a major South Korean financial services group, while SK Telecom is the country’s largest mobile network operator.

Their involvement gives BitGo local partners with established positions in financial services and telecommunications as it seeks to expand institutional cryptocurrency adoption.

The partnerships also position BitGo Korea to build relationships with domestic enterprises seeking regulated digital asset custody and transfer services.

South Korea’s Institutional Crypto Market Draws Attention

South Korea has long been recognized for its highly active retail cryptocurrency market.

During periods of strong trading activity, daily volumes on domestic cryptocurrency exchanges have at times exceeded those of local stock markets.

However, a weaker global cryptocurrency market has affected retail activity, with major exchanges Upbit and Bithumb reporting lower first-half trading profits.

As retail trading slows, institutional participation is attracting greater attention from companies seeking longer-term opportunities in the country’s digital asset sector.

BitGo’s entry provides institutions with another regulated option for managing and transferring cryptocurrency holdings.

BitGo Korea adds to the company’s existing regulated operations in the United States, Singapore, Germany, and Dubai.

The expansion follows BitGo’s listing on the New York Stock Exchange earlier this year at a valuation of approximately $2 billion.

The company has positioned regulated custody and institutional infrastructure as central components of its growth strategy, providing an alternative to business models that depend heavily on cryptocurrency trading volumes.

BitGo shares climbed 16% on Wednesday as cryptocurrency prices advanced. The stock was up another 3.2% in premarket trading following the company’s South Korean licensing announcement.

The market reaction comes as BitGo seeks to extend its international presence and capture growing demand for regulated institutional cryptocurrency services.
