Oil prices fell sharply while cryptocurrencies posted modest gains Monday after President Donald Trump suggested the conflict with Iran could be ending, before later escalating his rhetoric on social media.
In a phone interview with CBS News Monday, Trump indicated military operations were winding down. The US military claims to have struck more than 3,000 Iranian targets during the first week of operations. "I think the war is very complete, pretty much," Trump stated. "If you look, they have nothing left. There's nothing left in a military sense."
The comments triggered a 28% oil price decline from a four-year high of $118 to approximately $85 within hours. However, Trump subsequently intensified war rhetoric on Truth Social Tuesday, warning Iran that blocking oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz would provoke retaliation "TWENTY TIMES HARDER than they have been hit thus far."
"Death, Fire, and Fury will reign upon them, But I hope, and pray, that it does not happen!" Trump wrote, while threatening to destroy targets making it "virtually impossible for Iran to ever be built back, as a Nation, again."
At a Republican congressional fundraising event Monday, Trump suggested military operations would continue. "We've already won in many ways, but we haven't won enough. We go forward more determined than ever to achieve ultimate victory that will end this long-running danger once and for all."
Cryptocurrency markets rose 3.1% over 24 hours, with Bitcoin reclaiming $70,000 and Ether hovering just above $2,000. Industry analysts characterized Trump's conflicting statements as difficult to interpret given other administration officials indicating operations remain in early phases with US military assets still deployed regionally.
Cryptocurrency prices are expected to follow broader risk assets without independent fundamental narratives near-term, with macro direction driven by oil markets experiencing $30 swings within 24 hours. Iran's Revolutionary Guard reportedly dismissed Trump's comments as "nonsense," stating "we are the ones that will determine the end of the war."
