Ethereum Foundation Eliminates 54 Positions

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has reduced its workforce by approximately 20%, cutting 54 jobs as part of a major organizational restructuring aimed at streamlining operations and sharpening its focus on Ethereum’s long-term development.

The layoffs were announced Tuesday in a blog post and mark the culmination of a months-long internal reorganization tied to the Foundation’s updated mandate and treasury management strategy.

According to the EF, the restructuring has resulted in a “leaner and more focused” organization better aligned with the critical priorities required to support the future growth of the Ethereum ecosystem.

The workforce reduction comes during a period of significant leadership turnover at the Ethereum Foundation.

Earlier this month, co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang stepped down from her position, following the previous departure of co-executive director Tomasz Stańczak.

In response to the leadership transition, board member Bastian Aue has taken on expanded responsibilities overseeing daily operations and guiding the Foundation through its restructuring efforts.

Over the past six months, approximately nine senior leaders have either left the organization or transitioned into new roles, prompting increased scrutiny over the Foundation’s governance structure and strategic direction.

Governance Questions Emerge as Competition Intensifies

The wave of departures has raised concerns among some members of the Ethereum community about the Foundation’s ability to maintain effective leadership during a period of growing competition in the blockchain industry.

Ethereum continues to face pressure from rival blockchain networks seeking to attract developers, users, and institutional capital through faster innovation cycles and alternative governance models.

As a result, the Foundation’s performance and organizational structure have become increasingly important topics within the broader Ethereum ecosystem.

As part of its restructuring efforts, the Foundation has reorganized its operations into five key work clusters designed to support Ethereum’s long-term roadmap.

Among the newly established divisions is a dedicated institutional layer focused on strengthening enterprise engagement, expanding financial infrastructure initiatives, and coordinating policy-related efforts.

The move signals a growing emphasis on institutional adoption as Ethereum seeks to expand its role within traditional finance and enterprise applications.

Despite the workforce reduction and leadership transitions, the Ethereum Foundation maintains that the restructuring is intended to strengthen its ability to support the network's long-term success.

By concentrating resources around a smaller number of strategic priorities, the organization hopes to improve efficiency and better position itself to address Ethereum’s technical, institutional, and ecosystem challenges in the years ahead.
