Learn more about Basic Attention Token.

Basic Attention Token (BAT), a token used on the Brave browser, which was created by the inventor of Javascript and co-founder of Mozilla Firefox, Brendan Eich. Brave browser’s main benefit is that it is faster at loading pages than Chrome or any other browser available today. It does this by blocking ads and trackers, and is extremely secure.

The Basic Attention Token system encompasses a multitude of components for example; attention measurement systems, analytics dashboards and machine learning algorithms. So, integrating BAT in a given host application includes the mandatory implementation of BAT Ads. A system that matches users with relevant ads based on locally stored ad data. The targeting practice is completely performed on-device, which removes the need for third-party tracking. Thus, solving the pain point of digital advertising that Brendan Eich has so clearly pointed out.

The Brave browser will essentially give users more freedom to choose whether to view ads. Publishers must purchase and spend BAT to get their advertisements shown to users. Users who choose to view Ads and take relevant actions (such as purchases or clicks) will get paid in BAT.

For example, the Brave browser provides an ad-free YouTube video experience. Users can choose to donate BAT to YouTube content creators they like. Alternatively, users can accept YouTube Ads and get paid for each Ad they watch. A portion of this payment also gets distributed to the YouTuber.
