The Sui blockchain mainnet has resumed normal activity following a prolonged outage that temporarily halted block production and transaction processing across the network.

Sui Mainnet Restores Operations After Five-Hour Network Stall

TL;DR

  • Sui restored network operations after a five-hour stall, caused by a crash bug in its 1.72 software release.

  • The outage froze transactions and prompted DeFi protocols to pause activity.

The Sui blockchain mainnet has resumed normal activity following a prolonged outage that temporarily halted block production and transaction processing across the network.

The Sui team confirmed in an X post that operations were restored late Thursday, with the network now processing transactions and producing blocks as usual after more than five hours of disruption.

Crash Bug in Gas Logic Triggered Network Halt

According to the development team, the outage was caused by a crash bug in the network’s gas charging logic introduced in the 1.72 software release.

The bug led to a full network stall, freezing checkpoint updates and bringing transaction activity to a standstill. Engineers worked to identify and deploy a fix during the incident.

A full technical postmortem is expected in the coming days to explain the failure and outline preventive measures.

During the outage, blockchain explorers showed no new activity on the network, and several decentralized applications—including lending protocols—paused deposits and withdrawals as a precaution.

Sui acknowledged the issue publicly, stating:

“Sui Mainnet is currently experiencing a network stall. The Sui Core team is actively working on a solution. Be aware that transactions may be paused at this time.”

Despite the disruption, the team reported no evidence of lost or compromised user funds.

Second Major Outage Raises Reliability Concerns

This incident marks the second significant outage for Sui this year, following a similar multi-hour disruption in January linked to consensus-related issues.

The recurrence adds to broader concerns about reliability in high-performance blockchain networks, particularly those still undergoing rapid technical iteration.

Sui is not alone in experiencing outages. Several major blockchain ecosystems have faced similar disruptions:

  • Solana has experienced multiple high-profile outages, including a five-hour halt in February 2024 tied to a JIT compiler bug and earlier issues involving spam traffic and validator coordination.

  • Polygon suffered a multi-hour disruption in March 2022 due to a Heimdall layer bug.

  • Some Ethereum Layer-2 networks, including Linea, have also seen temporary operational interruptions.

  • In contrast, Ethereum mainnet has largely maintained consistent uptime, often cited as a benchmark for network reliability.
