Solana has tripled its maximum transaction size to 4,096 bytes, giving developers more capacity for complex trades, multisig wallets and privacy apps.

Solana has more than tripled the amount of data developers can include in a single transaction, creating additional capacity for complex trades, corporate wallet approvals and privacy-focused applications.

The blockchain’s new Transaction V1 format went live on Tuesday at approximately 01:00 UTC, according to the Solana Foundation. The upgrade raises the maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes.

The change addresses a longstanding technical constraint that forced developers to compress operations or divide them across multiple transactions.

Transaction V1 Raises Limit to 4,096 Bytes

Solana’s additional transaction capacity can hold more instructions, signatures and other information required to execute an operation.

The upgrade does not increase the number of transactions the network can process per second. Instead, it allows each individual transaction to carry more data and perform more complicated tasks.

Under the previous 1,232-byte limit, developers often had to fit extensive instructions into a small data package or break a single workflow into several separate transactions.

Increasing the limit to 4,096 bytes gives applications more flexibility and could help Solana support increasingly sophisticated financial and privacy use cases.

Solana has historically offered lower fees and faster transaction processing than Ethereum. However, its strict transaction-size cap created limitations for applications requiring large amounts of data.

Ethereum does not impose the same fixed protocol-level transaction limit. Instead, it uses a flexible block gas limit, allowing users to execute data-intensive operations as long as they are willing to pay the required fees.

Transaction V1 reduces Solana’s disadvantage by allowing developers to include more information in one operation. Ethereum nevertheless retains structural flexibility because its transaction capacity is tied to available gas rather than a rigid byte limit.

This upgrade comes roughly a week after the Solana team announced it on X. 

Corporate Wallets and Privacy Apps Gain More Room

The larger format could be particularly useful for corporate and institutional wallets requiring several signatures to authorize a transfer.

Each additional approval adds data to a transaction, making Solana’s former limit restrictive for organizations using complex authorization policies.

Zero-knowledge proofs could also benefit from the upgrade. These cryptographic tools allow applications to verify information without revealing the underlying data but can require substantial transaction capacity.

Both multisignature wallet approvals and zero-knowledge proofs were identified as important use cases in the upgrade’s design proposal.

Transaction V1 allows developers to combine more steps into a single atomic operation.

Atomic execution means that either every step completes successfully or the entire transaction is reversed. This prevents users from being left with partially executed operations if one component fails.

Developers previously worked around the size restriction by bundling multiple transactions together. However, those bundles do not provide the same protocol-level guarantee that every included action will succeed or fail as one unit.

Apps Must Update to Read V1 Transactions

Wallets, trading applications, analytics platforms and data providers must update their infrastructure to recognize the new format.

An application that cannot interpret V1 transactions may fail when requesting information about an individual transaction. Requests for an entire block could also fail if the block contains just one V1 transaction.

The Solana Foundation emphasized that these are compatibility warnings rather than evidence of a network outage.

Older transaction formats remain supported. Applications can continue submitting transactions in those formats, but they still need to support Transaction V1 to read all activity occurring on the blockchain.
