The rare David Bowie NFT non-fungible token (NFT) collection was listed on leading marketplace OpenSea and was sold for $127,000 on Monday night. The exhibition was created by exciting young NFT artist FEWOCiOUS, who created the collection to honor the iconic British artist.

Unique David Bowie Collection

A partnership between the David Bowie estate and OpenSea was formed to sell “Bowie on the Blockchain.” The 15-piece NFT collection celebrates the life and work of the British pop legend, who was known for his unique and flamboyant style.

The collection first went up in the marketplace on September 30th, made up of artworks from nine artists within the NFT space. The standout name is 19-year-old NFT artist FEWOCiOUS, who created an animated video clip paired with a huge sculpture wearing one of Bowie’s custom suits from his archive.

The Las Vegas-born artist said in the art piece description: I thought it was so cool that he was always what he wanted to be. And created a world that he wanted to live in. That's the feeling I try to capture in my art.”

The piece was sold for 96.5 ETH ($127,000), while other NFTs from the collection have been sold for significantly less—ranging from between 3 ETH ($4,000) to 7.5 ETH ($9,800). After FEWOCiOUS’s work, the second-highest amount bid was for “It Become A Myth Land”, created by artist Defaced.

The collection will be available on OpenSea until the final collection is sold on November 3rd. Once the sale is concluded, 100% of the profits will be donated to CARE, an organization that focuses on tackling global poverty and hunger, one of Bowie’s passions,

Celebrity Estates Creating NFTs

David Bowie is the latest in a long list of celebrity estates using NFTs to promote the heritage of former artists. This summer, Biggie Small’s estate released a 3,000-piece collection of generative art profile pictures called “Sky’s The Limit”, which was created in collaboration with NFT marketplace OneOf.

The same NFT marketplace has a record of helping other celebrity estate ventures. At the end of last year, the company inked a deal with Whitney Houston’s estate to sell an unreleased track as an NFT, which sold for $1 million. The executor of her estate, Pat Houston, commented to say about the collection, “I’m excited to see Whitney's legacy and her wonderful music expand into the bold new technology of this era.”
