Coinbase has introduced new AI agent tools that enable businesses to accept USDC payments, users to automate crypto trading, and developers to integrate agentic payments using the x402 protocol.

Coinbase Expands AI Agent Ecosystem With Autonomous Payments and Trading Tools

TL;DR

  • Coinbase has launched new tools to support the growing AI agent economy.

  • Businesses can now accept USDC payments from AI agents through the x402 protocol and Coinbase Payments.

  • Users can automate crypto trading using natural language commands and monitor AI-driven trades in real time.

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is expanding its push into artificial intelligence with a suite of new products designed to support the emerging agentic economy, where autonomous AI agents can make payments, execute trades, and interact with online services on behalf of users.

The latest rollout introduces new capabilities for businesses, traders and developers, positioning Coinbase as a key infrastructure provider for AI-powered digital commerce.

Businesses Can Now Accept Payments From AI Agents

One of the biggest announcements is the expansion of Coinbase Business, which now allows merchants to accept payments directly from AI agents.

The feature is powered by the x402 protocol, a payment standard developed and incubated by Coinbase.

Using the protocol, businesses can receive USDC payments from autonomous AI agents without requiring additional payment infrastructure or complex setup. Transactions are processed through Coinbase Payments, enabling AI-powered purchasing experiences for merchants.

According to Coinbase, the goal is to make AI agents first-class participants in online commerce.

Sid Coelho-Prabhu, Head of Coinbase Business, said the company is recreating the traditional retail payment experience for autonomous AI systems.

In a conventional transaction, a shopper uses a credit card or bank account to purchase goods from a merchant equipped with payment infrastructure.

Coinbase aims to replicate that model for AI agents. The company explained that developers can create digital wallets for AI agents using Coinbase's developer platform, allowing those agents to browse online services, make purchases, and complete transactions independently.

At the same time, merchants can expose their products and services through an AI-friendly checkout system capable of accepting payments from autonomous software.

AI-Powered Crypto Trading Comes to Coinbase Users

Coinbase is also enhancing its trading platform with new AI-assisted features.

Users can now monitor an AI agent's trading activity through a live order interface that displays open orders, active positions, order status, trade size, and execution prices.

The dashboard allows users to supervise every action their AI trading assistant takes in real time.

The new tools also introduce natural language trading commands. Instead of manually configuring trading strategies, users can simply describe what they want in everyday language.

Coinbase said the AI agents have access to the same real-time WebSocket market data used by institutional trading desks, enabling them to respond quickly to changing market conditions.

Coinbase is also targeting developers building AI-powered applications. Through the Coinbase Developer Platform, the company introduced a new x402 Software Development Kit (SDK) that simplifies payment integration for agentic applications.

According to Coinbase, developers can add x402 payment support to APIs, MCP servers, and Web services.

The integration requires only a few lines of code, making it easier to enable AI agents to complete payments across digital platforms.

The latest product launch highlights Coinbase's broader strategy of becoming the infrastructure layer for AI-driven commerce.
