BlackRock Moves Closer to Launch of Bitcoin Yield ETF

BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, has taken a major step toward launching its proposed Bitcoin exchange-traded fund after filing a Form 8-A with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The filing was submitted on Thursday for the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF, indicating that the product may be nearing its official debut.

Form 8-A is used to register securities under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and market analysts say it often precedes an ETF launch by a short window.

Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas commented:

“That typically means launch in one week… so if I had to bet I’d say next Thursday BITA goes live.”

While not confirmed, the filing has increased expectations that the ETF could begin trading within days.

ETF Strategy Focuses on Bitcoin Yield Generation

The proposed iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF is designed to provide spot Bitcoin exposure combined with income generation through options strategies.

The fund will primarily hold exposure linked to BlackRock’s existing spot Bitcoin ETF, iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). It will also actively sell call options to generate yield, and offer investors a covered-call style income strategy on Bitcoin exposure

This structure aims to appeal to investors seeking both price exposure and periodic income from crypto-linked assets.

BlackRock’s latest amendment to the filing set the sponsor fee at 0.65%, positioning it below several competing covered-call Bitcoin ETF products in the market.

The adjustment suggests an aggressive pricing strategy as competition among Bitcoin yield ETFs intensifies.

BlackRock is not alone in pursuing this segment. Goldman Sachs is also working with regulators on its own Bitcoin premium income ETF, initially filed in April. Bloomberg’s Eric Balchunas has previously suggested that the Goldman product could launch around July 1, pending approval.

The filings highlight a broader trend in digital asset markets: increasing demand for structured Bitcoin products that generate yield, rather than simple spot exposure.

If approved, BlackRock’s ETF could become one of the first major Bitcoin-covered-call products from a top-tier global asset manager.
