Wells Fargo will launch tokenized deposits for select corporate clients, beginning with 24/7 U.S. dollar-to-British pound transactions.

Wells Fargo to Launch Tokenized Deposits for Corporate Clients

TL;DR

  • Wells Fargo plans to introduce tokenized deposits for select corporate and commercial clients later this year.

  • The initial service will support round-the-clock transactions between the U.S. dollar and British pound.

  • The bank expects to expand the platform to more clients, currencies and countries throughout 2027.

Wells Fargo is preparing to offer tokenized deposits to a limited group of corporate and commercial clients later this year, marking its latest push into blockchain-powered banking services.

The initial rollout will enable clients to conduct U.S. dollar-to-British pound transactions around the clock using Wells Fargo’s proprietary blockchain infrastructure. The bank intends to expand the service to additional currencies, countries and customers throughout 2027.

Wells Fargo Targets 24/7 Cross-Border Settlement

Once fully deployed, the tokenized-deposit platform is expected to allow eligible clients to move, program and settle funds 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Wells Fargo says its system will automatically route qualifying payments through tokenized deposits when the technology provides greater speed or flexibility. Clients will not need to change how they normally interact with the bank.

This approach could help businesses complete cross-border payments outside conventional banking hours while reducing delays associated with existing settlement systems.

How Tokenized Deposits Differ From Stablecoins

Tokenized deposits are blockchain-based representations of conventional bank balances. Although they share some technical characteristics with stablecoins, the two products have different legal and financial structures.

Stablecoins are generally digital tokens issued by private companies and backed by reserves such as cash or government securities. Tokenized deposits, by comparison, remain commercial bank money and represent claims against the issuing bank.

Wells Fargo says its tokenized deposits will carry the same regulatory protections and deposit-insurance eligibility as its existing qualifying deposit products.

Wells Fargo plans to introduce conditional payments powered by smart contracts as the platform develops. These transactions could be programmed to execute automatically when specified conditions are satisfied.

Programmable payments could support use cases such as supplier settlements, treasury management and automated corporate transactions.

The platform may also eventually include Wells Fargo-operated custodial wallets and connections to external blockchain networks. According to The Wall Street Journal, the bank has said its infrastructure could integrate with a shared tokenized-deposit network under development by The Clearing House.

Major Banks Expand Blockchain Payment Services

Wells Fargo joins JPMorgan and Citi in developing institutional tokenized-deposit products. Large banks are increasingly exploring blockchain-based payment systems as stablecoins gain traction in payments and threaten to draw funds away from conventional bank deposits.

The planned rollout also follows Wells Fargo’s March trademark application for “WFUSD.” The name could potentially be associated with a tokenized deposit or stablecoin product, although its intended use has not been confirmed.

Wells Fargo has been developing blockchain-based payment infrastructure since at least 2019, when it announced Wells Fargo Digital Cash for internal cross-border transfers.

The bank later began settling foreign-exchange transactions with HSBC through a shared blockchain platform. Its forthcoming tokenized-deposit service expands those efforts by bringing blockchain settlement capabilities directly to selected corporate and commercial customers.
