Meta Reportedly Developing Prediction Market App ‘Arena’ to Capitalize on Growing Industry Trend

TL;DR

  • Meta is developing a prediction market app called ‘Arena’.

  • The platform would allow users to forecast the outcomes of future events spanning politics, sports, entertainment, and global affairs.

Meta Explores Entry Into Prediction Markets

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is reportedly developing a new prediction market application called Arena, according to sources familiar with the project who spoke with The New York Times.

The platform would allow users to forecast the outcomes of future events spanning politics, sports, entertainment, and global affairs.

While the product is still under development, sources say Meta is currently considering a points-based system similar to video games rather than real-money wagering.

However, the company has reportedly not ruled out introducing cash-based betting features in the future.

People familiar with the initiative described Arena as both an experimental product and a major strategic priority within Meta.

The project signals Meta’s growing interest in prediction markets, a sector that has rapidly gained momentum over the past two years as consumers increasingly seek alternative ways to engage with current events and public discourse.

Prediction Markets Gain Mainstream Attention

Meta’s interest comes amid a surge in popularity for prediction market platforms, particularly following the success of Polymarket during the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

The crypto-based platform attracted millions of dollars in wagers on electoral outcomes, generating billions in trading volume and helping prediction markets move from a niche concept into mainstream political and financial discussions.

The growing visibility of prediction markets has encouraged both technology companies and financial platforms to explore similar products.

This is not the first time Meta has experimented with prediction-based platforms. In 2020, the company launched Forecast, a product that encouraged users to make predictions about current events, social trends, and developments related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The platform was ultimately discontinued in 2022, but its existence demonstrated Meta’s long-standing interest in leveraging collective forecasting and crowd-sourced predictions.

Arena appears to build on that concept while potentially incorporating more interactive and engaging features.

Meta joins a growing list of companies seeking exposure to the prediction market sector. Crypto-focused firms such as Coinbase and Kraken have explored opportunities involving event-based trading and prediction contracts.

Meanwhile, retail brokerage Robinhood has introduced products that allow users to speculate on political and economic outcomes through event contracts.

The trend reflects increasing consumer demand for platforms that blend elements of finance, forecasting, and social engagement.

Despite their popularity, prediction markets remain controversial among regulators and policymakers.

Critics argue that contracts tied to elections, geopolitical developments, and other sensitive events often blur the distinction between legitimate financial instruments and gambling activities.

Regulators have also expressed concerns regarding market manipulation, insider information, consumer protection, and the possibility that participants could profit from outcomes they may be able to influence directly.

Meta’s Move Could Further Legitimize Prediction Markets

If Arena moves beyond the experimental stage and reaches public launch, Meta’s enormous user base could significantly expand mainstream awareness of prediction markets.

The company's entry would represent one of the most notable endorsements of the sector by a major technology firm and could accelerate broader adoption among retail users.
