Bitcoin surges past $75,000 and reclaims its 200-day moving average as US Treasury buybacks fuel optimism for a potential rally to $100,000.

Bitcoin Tops $75K, Clears Key Indicator for First Time Since 2025

TL;DR

  • Bitcoin climbed above $75,000 on Thursday after gaining more than 15% since Wednesday.

  • BTC crossed above its 200-day moving average for the first time since November 2025.

  • The breakout suggests Bitcoin’s prolonged downtrend may be weakening, although sustained trading above the indicator remains crucial.

  • The rally followed a U.S. Treasury announcement expanding liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated Treasury securities.

Bitcoin’s latest rally has carried the cryptocurrency above its 200-day moving average for the first time in approximately nine months, signaling a potential shift in its longer-term market trend.

Charting platform Barchart reported Thursday that Bitcoin had reclaimed the closely watched technical indicator for the first time since November 2025.

The breakout came as BTC climbed above $75,000, according to TradingView data, following a sharp increase in risk appetite across financial markets.

Bitcoin Reclaims Key Long-Term Technical Indicator

The 200-day moving average is commonly used to assess whether an asset is trading in a longer-term bullish or bearish trend.

A sustained move above the indicator is generally interpreted as evidence that market momentum is improving, while prices below it can signal persistent weakness.

Bitcoin had not traded above its 200-day moving average since November 2025, approximately one month after reaching an all-time high above $126,000.

Its return above the indicator suggests the months-long downturn that followed that peak may be losing momentum.

However, traders will likely watch whether Bitcoin can maintain its position above the moving average, as a brief breakout alone does not confirm a lasting trend reversal.

Bitcoin’s advance accelerated after the U.S. Treasury Department announced plans to increase liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated Treasury securities.

The department said it would at least double the maximum size of each operation from $2 billion to at least $4 billion beginning September 9.

The initiative is intended to improve liquidity in the long-term Treasury market.

Following the announcement, longer-term Treasury yields initially declined, helping improve sentiment toward risk-sensitive assets, including cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin has gained more than 15% since Wednesday, pushing its price above $75,000 by Thursday.

Standard Chartered Sees Potential Path Toward $100,000

The Treasury’s planned buyback expansion has also fueled more optimistic forecasts for Bitcoin.

Standard Chartered’s Geoff Kendrick said the move could help drive a broader Bitcoin rally toward $100,000 by year-end.

From approximately $75,000, reaching $100,000 would represent an additional gain of roughly 36%.

Whether Bitcoin can sustain its recovery may depend on continued macroeconomic support, improving liquidity conditions, and its ability to remain above the 200-day moving average.
