2 Million UK Investors Gain Access to Bitcoin and Ether ETNs

TL;DR

  • Hargreaves Lansdown has listed nine bitcoin and ether exchange-traded notes for its two million clients.

  • Available issuers include BlackRock’s iShares, Bitwise, CoinShares, WisdomTree, 21Shares and Invesco.

  • The products carry annual fees ranging from 0% to 0.35%.

  • The launch follows the UK financial regulator’s decision to lift its four-year ban on retail access to crypto ETNs.

Hargreaves Lansdown Lists Nine Crypto ETNs

Hargreaves Lansdown, the UK’s largest retail investment platform, has started offering nine exchange-traded notes providing exposure to bitcoin and ether.

The new listings give the platform’s two million clients access to crypto products from BlackRock’s iShares, CoinShares, WisdomTree, 21Shares, Invesco and Bitwise. Annual fees range from 0% to 0.35%, the company said in a Thursday announcement.

The launch brings regulated bitcoin and ether exposure to a mainstream investment platform managing more than $200 billion in client assets.

Investors can now gain exposure to the two largest cryptocurrencies without creating an account on a crypto exchange or managing digital assets through a private wallet.

Hargreaves Lansdown’s decision represents a significant change from its previously cautious stance toward digital assets.

Less than a year ago, the company warned retail clients against investing in cryptocurrencies.

Despite bitcoin’s long-term price appreciation, the firm argued that it was “not an asset class” because it lacked the fundamental characteristics needed to support portfolio growth or income.

Hargreaves Lansdown also highlighted bitcoin’s history of extreme losses and said investors should not rely on it to meet their financial objectives.

The platform has not withdrawn those warnings. Instead, it said regulatory changes now allow it to provide access to regulated crypto investment products while ensuring that clients understand the substantial risks involved.

UK Regulator Lifted Four-Year Retail Ban

The listings follow the Financial Conduct Authority’s decision to end its four-year prohibition on retail access to crypto ETNs.

The FCA lifted the restriction in October, opening the market to individual investors while retaining consumer-protection requirements for firms offering the products.

Crypto ETNs track the value of underlying digital assets but trade through conventional investment platforms. They allow investors to gain price exposure without directly buying, storing or transferring cryptocurrency.

Unlike direct cryptocurrency holdings, ETNs also carry risks linked to their issuers and product structures, in addition to the volatility of the underlying assets.

Hargreaves Lansdown requires first-time crypto ETN buyers to complete an appropriateness assessment before trading.

The assessment is intended to determine whether clients have sufficient knowledge to understand the products and their risks, including the possibility of losing their entire investment.

New buyers must also wait 24 hours after completing the assessment before making a purchase.

These measures reflect FCA rules governing the sale of high-risk investments to retail clients. They are designed to reduce impulsive decisions and ensure that customers understand the volatility and potential losses associated with crypto-linked products.

Crypto Products Enter Mainstream UK Investing

The launch is significant because it provides two million retail investors with access to bitcoin and ether through an established UK investment service.

Previously, many investors seeking cryptocurrency exposure had to use specialist trading platforms or crypto exchanges. Adding ETNs to Hargreaves Lansdown gives clients the option to buy crypto-linked products alongside traditional investments through their existing accounts.

The listings do not indicate that the platform now considers bitcoin or ether suitable for every portfolio. However, they show how regulatory changes are bringing digital-asset exposure into the UK’s mainstream retail investment market.
