S&P Global Buys Blockchain Security Firm Behind $37T in Transactions

TL;DR

  • S&P Global has agreed to acquire blockchain security specialist OpenZeppelin.

  • The acquisition will expand S&P Global’s risk-assessment services into smart contracts and other onchain technologies.

  • OpenZeppelin says its open-source libraries have supported more than $37 trillion in transferred value.

  • CEO Demian Brener will continue leading OpenZeppelin as a separate business unit.

S&P Global Expands Into Onchain Security

Financial information and credit ratings provider S&P Global has agreed to acquire OpenZeppelin, a company specializing in smart contract security and blockchain development.

The companies announced the agreement Thursday, describing it as an expansion of S&P Global’s risk-assessment capabilities into the onchain technology layer.

The acquisition will combine S&P Global’s position in traditional financial markets with OpenZeppelin’s experience securing stablecoins, tokenized investment products, decentralized finance protocols and blockchain-based marketplaces.

OpenZeppelin CEO Demian Brener said the partnership would allow the company’s security standards and technology to reach more traditional organizations entering digital-asset markets. It could also strengthen support for blockchain networks and DeFi protocols seeking greater institutional adoption.

OpenZeppelin Brings a Decade of Blockchain Expertise

Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin provides security audits, risk assessments, and secure development tools for blockchain applications.

The company is widely known for its open-source smart contract libraries, which provide standardized code for building tokens, governance systems, and other decentralized applications.

OpenZeppelin says its libraries have supported more than $37 trillion in transferred value and underpin most of the largest stablecoins and tokenized funds. The firm also claims to have completed more than 900 security engagements for cryptocurrency protocols and financial institutions.

Its technology and expertise could help S&P Global evaluate risks beyond the financial structure of tokenized products, including vulnerabilities within the smart contracts and blockchain systems supporting them.

Following the acquisition, OpenZeppelin will continue operating under its existing brand as a separate S&P Global business unit.

Brener will remain in charge of the company and report to S&P Global Ratings President Yann Le Pallec.

Le Pallec said S&P Global’s digital-asset strategy focuses on bringing trusted information, benchmarks and transparent risk assessments to financial markets as more activity moves onchain.

He added that OpenZeppelin’s technology would complement S&P Global’s existing smart contract and blockchain risk capabilities. The combination is intended to give traditional financial institutions and DeFi-focused companies greater confidence when developing and using onchain products.

Financial Terms Remain Undisclosed

The companies did not reveal the financial terms of the acquisition. The agreement remains subject to customary closing requirements. S&P Global said it does not expect the transaction to have a material effect on its financial results.

The deal comes as banks, asset managers and other financial institutions increasingly explore stablecoins and tokenized assets, creating greater demand for independent assessments of blockchain infrastructure and smart contract risks.
