Solana to Cut Transaction Finality to 150 Milliseconds on October 21

Solana schedules Alpenglow for October 21, targeting 150-millisecond finality while changing validator voting, software requirements, and fees.

Solana to Cut Transaction Finality to 150 Milliseconds on October 21

TL;DR

  • Solana has scheduled its Alpenglow consensus upgrade for October 21.

  • The upgrade targets transaction finality of roughly 150 milliseconds, with performance dependent on network conditions.

  • Alpenglow replaces TowerBFT and moves validator voting offchain, potentially reducing reported transaction counts.

  • Validators must use software built on Agave 4.3.0, with Firedancer and Frankendancer operators required to switch temporarily.

Solana has scheduled October 21 for the activation of Alpenglow, a major network upgrade designed to finalize transactions in approximately 150 milliseconds.

The updated timetable from the Solana Foundation outlines the replacement of TowerBFT, the consensus voting system the blockchain has used since launching in 2020.

The upgrade aims to shorten the time needed to establish that a transaction cannot be reversed. The 150-millisecond figure remains a performance target rather than a guarantee under all network conditions.

Alpenglow Aims to Strengthen Payment Finality

Solana transactions can already appear successful almost immediately. Alpenglow focuses on delivering a stronger assurance that those transactions are irreversible within a similarly short period.

That distinction matters for businesses and services that wait for finality before taking another action.

A merchant could confirm a payment sooner, while a blockchain bridge could reduce the time it waits before releasing funds on another network.

Alpenglow changes how validators—the computers that verify transactions and secure Solana—reach agreement. Instead of submitting votes as blockchain transactions, validators will exchange votes directly.

Enough approvals will be combined into a certificate that finalizes a block after one or two voting rounds.

Moving validator votes offchain could cause a sharp decline in Solana’s reported transaction count after activation.

Currently, validator votes are recorded in blocks and contribute to the network’s overall transaction totals. Those entries will disappear under Alpenglow.

Consequently, a lower headline transaction count would not necessarily mean fewer trades, payments, or other user transactions.

Assessing activity after the upgrade will require distinguishing changes in consensus-related traffic from changes in actual network usage.

Validators Must Prepare for Software and Fee Changes

Validator operators will need software built on Agave 4.3.0 to participate in the migration.

Firedancer and Frankendancer will not support the initial transition. Operators using those alternative validator clients will therefore need to switch temporarily to compatible software.

Alpenglow also changes validator costs. Existing voting charges of approximately 1 SOL per epoch will disappear and be replaced by a flat admission fee of 0.8 SOL.

An epoch is the period over which Solana assigns validators their network responsibilities.

The migration is scheduled for epoch 1064, which is expected to start around 15:00 UTC on October 21.

Solana will retain its existing voting system for the first 5,000 slots of that epoch. Slots are the short windows allocated for block production.

The switch to Alpenglow is expected roughly 18 minutes later, placing the anticipated transition around 15:18 UTC if the epoch begins as projected.
