The move aligns with Japan’s broader push toward crypto adoption, including new regulatory changes and stablecoin initiatives by major banks.
Institutional Shift Toward Digital Assets
A Japanese corporate pension fund is preparing to invest in cryptocurrencies starting in fiscal 2026, reflecting growing acceptance of digital assets within the country’s traditional financial system, according to local reports from Nikkei.
The National Business Corporate Pension Fund, based in Okayama, plans to allocate around 1% of its total assets to crypto through a passive fund managed by a hedge fund. The report was originally cited by Nikkei.
The pension fund represents roughly 1,200 small and midsize enterprises and oversees about ¥21.3 billion ($131.8 million) in assets through its retirement savings program.
The planned crypto allocation is part of a broader portfolio rebalancing strategy aimed at reducing currency risk and diversifying exposure.
In fiscal 2025, the fund’s asset allocation was structured as:
-
80% in yen-denominated assets
-
15% in U.S. dollar-denominated assets
-
5% in other currencies
For fiscal 2026, it plans to adjust its portfolio to:
-
70% yen-denominated assets
-
10% developed-market currencies
-
5% emerging-market currencies
-
5% gold and crypto assets combined
The fund has not yet provided additional public comments.
Rising Institutional and Regulatory Momentum in Japan
The move comes as Japan accelerates regulatory clarity and institutional adoption of cryptocurrencies.
Earlier this month, Japan’s lower house advanced a bill that would classify cryptocurrencies as financial instruments. If approved by the upper house, the law could take effect as early as next year.
At the same time, major Japanese banks — including MUFG Bank, Mizuho Bank, and SMBC — are preparing to launch live commercial transactions using a jointly issued stablecoin during fiscal 2026. SBI Shinsei Bank is also reportedly planning a crypto rewards program for deposit customers.
