Bitfinex Suffers A Minor Phishing Attack
Bitfinex, one of the leading cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, announced via a press release over the weekend that it had suffered a 'minor' information security attack.
According to the crypto exchange, the attacker was able to access partial, incomplete and stale information. Bitfinex added that the hacker phished customer support with limited access to supporting tools and helpdesk tickets. The cryptocurrency exchange wrote that,
“A small portion of our customer support boards, which held partial, incomplete and stale information, was accessed by an individual or group through the phishing of a customer support agent who did not have senior permissions and therefore had only limited access to supporting tools and helpdesk tickets.
None of Bitfinex’s systems were compromised, and there was no loss of customer funds. No server, wallet or database infrastructure was accessed. Law enforcement has been notified.”
Bitfinex added that affected users will be notified, though most of the affected accounts were empty or inactive. The cryptocurrency exchange added that it intends to work with law enforcement to track down the hacker.
This latest development comes a few days after Bitfinex was added to the UK’s ‘Warning List’ of companies that may be operating in the country without permission. The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) warned customers not to do business with Bitfinex.
