Cardano has been added to the official x402 software kit, giving developers tools to let apps and AI agents pay for online services with ADA or tokens issued on the network. The x402 documentation lists Cardano support in its TypeScript SDK, while Go and Python support are not yet listed.
How x402 Lets an Agent Pay for a Service
The x402 protocol uses the web’s “402 Payment Required” response to put payment instructions inside an ordinary internet request. A service can quote a price, receive a signed payment, and provide the requested data or computing power once the payment is verified.
For example, an AI agent preparing a report could pay for one dataset when it needs it, without someone first opening an account or buying a subscription.
Coinbase created x402 and later contributed it to the Linux Foundation’s x402 Foundation. Its members include Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google and Amazon Web Services. The toolkit also supports networks including Solana, the XRP Ledger and Ethereum-compatible chains.
Cardano Integration Reaches Pre-Production Testing
Cardano Foundation engineers built the software for requesting and accepting payments, along with a facilitator that verifies signed transactions and submits them to the network. The facilitator’s documentation says it completed a real transaction on Cardano’s pre-production network, but has not run on mainnet.
The addition gives developers a way to start integrating Cardano into x402 applications. It does not yet establish that AI agents are making commercial ADA payments at scale.
