Bitcoin fell below $63,000 as U.S. airstrikes on Iran and renewed U.S.-China tensions weighed on global markets, dragging Asian stocks and risk assets lower.

Bitcoin Dips Below $63K as U.S.-Iran Tensions and Trump’s China Claims Weigh on Risk Assets

TL;DR

  • Bitcoin slipped below $63,000 after fresh U.S. airstrikes on Iran and renewed U.S.-China tensions dampened investor sentiment.

  • Asian stocks declined, with Japan's Nikkei dropping nearly 3%, while Nasdaq futures also moved lower.

  • Rising geopolitical uncertainty could continue to pressure risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin fell below the $63,000 mark on Friday as investors shifted away from risk assets following fresh U.S. military strikes on Iran and renewed political tensions between the United States and China.

The leading cryptocurrency extended Thursday's decline after retreating from around $65,000, reflecting a broader risk-off move across global financial markets. At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading just below its 50-day Simple Moving Average (SMA), a closely watched technical indicator that often signals short-term market momentum.

Geopolitical Tensions Pressure Crypto and Global Markets

Risk sentiment weakened after reports that the United States launched additional airstrikes targeting infrastructure in southern Iran.

According to Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency, the strikes reportedly damaged five bridges in Hormozgan Province, while another missile strike hit the maritime control tower in Chabahar.

The escalation contributed to a sell-off across Asian equity markets.

  • Japan's Nikkei 225 fell nearly 3%, reaching its lowest level in more than a month.

  • Australia's ASX 200 declined around 0.5%.

  • Nasdaq futures slipped roughly 0.8% after the technology-heavy U.S. index lost more than 1.6% in the previous trading session.

Despite the heightened geopolitical tensions, WTI crude oil remained relatively stable at around $79 per barrel, suggesting energy markets have yet to fully price in the latest developments.

Investor sentiment was also affected after President Donald Trump announced the declassification of intelligence reports alleging Chinese interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Trump claimed Beijing had obtained approximately 220 million U.S. voter records, describing the alleged activity as a significant threat to American democracy. China has rejected the allegations.

While the claims themselves did not immediately move markets, investors appeared concerned that the renewed rhetoric could complicate diplomatic relations ahead of an anticipated meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year.

The uncertainty was reflected in the Australian dollar (AUD), which weakened against the U.S. dollar. The AUD is widely viewed as a proxy for China's economic outlook because of Australia's strong trade ties with Beijing.

Market analysts noted that rising friction between the world's two largest economies could increase volatility across financial markets.

Bitcoin Could Remain Sensitive to Macro Risks

The combination of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and renewed uncertainty surrounding U.S.-China relations has reinforced a cautious tone across global markets.

Historically, Bitcoin has traded in line with broader risk assets during periods of heightened macroeconomic uncertainty, despite its reputation as an alternative asset.

If geopolitical risks continue to escalate or diplomatic relations between Washington and Beijing deteriorate further, cryptocurrencies and other risk-sensitive assets could face additional downside pressure in the near term.
