X Layer Unveils Shared Infrastructure for Onchain Exchanges

X Layer, the EVM-compatible Layer 2 blockchain backed by OKX, has launched Exchange OS, a new infrastructure upgrade that allows users to deploy custom crypto markets directly onchain.

According to the official announcement, Exchange OS enables developers, institutions, and ecosystem participants to create spot, perpetual, and outcome markets using the same infrastructure stack that powers OKX. The team stated that,

“Exchange OS is designed to address one of the biggest structural limitations in on-chain finance today: fragmented infrastructure. Builders still face the same tradeoff — rely on centralized infrastructure or rebuild complex exchange systems from scratch.”

X Layer said Exchange OS is designed to eliminate this tradeoff by offering a shared market infrastructure that balances flexibility with operational efficiency.

The framework allows builders to customize market structure, design, risk management, and compliance settings while relying on a common protocol-level infrastructure.

Core exchange functions such as matching, margining, liquidation, settlement, and risk management are embedded directly into the protocol layer.

Through the X Layer Improvement Proposal for Exchange OS (XIP-Exchange OS), users can permissionlessly configure their own exchange models and market structures.

Unified Margin System Across Multiple Market Types

According to X Layer, traders using Exchange OS will benefit from a unified account and margin system spanning spot, perpetual futures, and outcome markets.

The team said the architecture allows a single market thesis to be expressed across different trading formats while utilizing the same liquidity pool and collateral base.

“A single market view — whether around AI, macro events, sports, or tokenized assets — can be expressed across multiple market structures using the same pool of capital,” the announcement stated.

To showcase the capabilities of Exchange OS, X Layer plans to launch its first venue built on the infrastructure next month.

The initial rollout will feature “2026 World Cup Outcomes,” a simulated prediction market tied to the 23rd FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The team said the project is intended to demonstrate the practical use of open market infrastructure before broader ecosystem adoption.

“In June, we will launch 2026 World Cup Outcomes, a simulated outcome market deployed directly on the infrastructure,” the X Layer team said.

“We wanted to build on the system ourselves before opening it more broadly because the best way to demonstrate open market infrastructure is to use it in production first.”

X Layer said Exchange OS is being rolled out gradually, with wider access expected over time through the XIP-Exchange OS governance framework.

“The next chapter of onchain finance should not be built by a single platform — it should be built by anyone with a market worth creating,” the team added.
