TL;DR

  • Bitcoin slipped below $64,000 on Tuesday, losing nearly 2% and surrendering much of its weekend rally.

  • MARA Holdings sold approximately 23,093 BTC for $1.63 billion during the first half of 2026.

  • Strategy sold 1,690 BTC last week and used the proceeds to repurchase preferred stock.

  • Shares of MARA and Strategy declined alongside Bitcoin.

Bitcoin (BTC) fell below $64,000 on Monday, declining nearly 2% over 24 hours and erasing much of the momentum gained during the weekend.

The pullback comes amid renewed selling pressure from crypto-focused companies, including Bitcoin miner MARA Holdings and corporate treasury firm Strategy. Both companies recently disclosed significant BTC sales as part of broader liquidity and capital-management strategies.

MARA Sells $1.63 Billion in Bitcoin During First Half of 2026

MARA Holdings sold approximately 23,093 BTC for $1.627 billion during the first six months of 2026, according to a quarterly Form 10-Q filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday.

The sales represent an expansion of MARA’s digital asset management strategy. In 2025, the Bitcoin mining company modified its policy to allow the sale of BTC generated through mining. It has since broadened that approach to include Bitcoin already held on its balance sheet.

MARA said the proceeds were used to finance ongoing operations, manage liquidity and pursue growth opportunities.

As of June 30, the company held 35,577 BTC valued at approximately $2.1 billion, based on a Bitcoin price of around $58,524. Of that total, 9,270 BTC were classified under MARA’s digital asset management strategy.

Bitcoin Sales Support MARA’s Liquidity Needs

Proceeds from the sales helped MARA cover debt repayments, capital expenditures, and other cash requirements.

The company also disclosed that it had begun a restructuring plan following a strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence-related opportunities and a sharp decline in Bitcoin prices earlier in the year.

MARA’s filing showed that the carrying value of its digital assets had fallen significantly from the end of 2025. The decline reflected both its Bitcoin sales and BTC’s lower market price at the June 30 reporting date.

Despite selling a substantial portion of its reserves, MARA said it may continue holding Bitcoin as a long-term investment. However, additional sales remain possible depending on market conditions and the company’s capital-allocation priorities.

“Our $2.1 billion Bitcoin position represents a significant and flexible source of liquidity,” the company said in the filing.

MARA shares fell 6.4% to $9.44 on Monday.

Strategy Sells 1,690 BTC to Repurchase Preferred Shares

Strategy also reduced its Bitcoin position last week, selling 1,690 BTC for approximately $108.6 million. The transaction was completed at an average price of $64,262 per Bitcoin.

The company used the entire amount to repurchase more than 1.15 million shares of its STRC variable-rate preferred stock through its Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program.

Strategy separately raised $653.1 million by selling 6.58 million shares of its MSTR common stock through an at-the-market offering.

Of those proceeds, $650 million was allocated to Strategy’s US dollar reserve. The company’s cash reserve reached $4.65 billion as of August 9, while the remaining proceeds were added to its general cash balance.

MSTR shares traded 2.2% lower at $97.70 on Monday, while MARA recorded a steeper decline.

Bitcoin was trading at approximately $63,930 at the time of writing, down almost 2% over the previous 24 hours. The disclosures from MARA and Strategy may have added to short-term market pressure as investors assessed the impact of corporate BTC sales.
