TL;DR

  • KB Kookmin Bank plans to launch a blockchain-powered cross-border corporate payment service using J.P. Morgan's Kinexys network next month.

  • The bank will become the first South Korean financial institution to use Kinexys for corporate import and export settlements.

  • The service will initially support U.S. dollar transfers across 10 countries, including the U.S., Singapore, India, the UAE, and South Korea.

South Korea's KB Kookmin Bank is preparing to launch a blockchain-powered cross-border payment service for corporate clients through J.P. Morgan's Kinexys platform, marking another milestone in the adoption of blockchain technology by traditional financial institutions.

According to local media reports, the new service is scheduled to go live next month under a partnership with Kinexys, enabling faster and more efficient international payments for businesses engaged in global trade.

First South Korean Bank to Join Kinexys Payment Network

KB Kookmin Bank will become the first financial institution in South Korea to use J.P. Morgan's Kinexys blockchain payment network for corporate import and export settlements.

The service is expected to operate through the bank's branches in South Korea as well as its Singapore branch, allowing corporate customers to process international transactions using blockchain infrastructure designed for institutional payments.

The rollout reflects growing interest among banks in leveraging blockchain technology to improve the speed, transparency, and efficiency of cross-border transactions.

During the initial launch, the service will focus on U.S. dollar transfers across 10 markets.

The supported countries include South Korea, the United States, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, India, Thailand, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and South Africa

By utilizing blockchain-based settlement, the bank aims to streamline international corporate payments while reducing processing times associated with traditional cross-border banking systems.

KB Kookmin Expands Blockchain Strategy

The latest initiative builds on KB Kookmin's broader blockchain ambitions. Earlier this year, KB Kookmin Card, one of South Korea's largest credit card providers, announced plans to develop a hybrid stablecoin payment system in collaboration with the Avalanche blockchain network.

The project is designed to explore how digital assets and blockchain infrastructure can enhance payment efficiency while maintaining compatibility with existing financial systems.

The new Kinexys partnership further demonstrates the bank's commitment to integrating blockchain technology into mainstream financial services.

Kinexys is J.P. Morgan's blockchain division, offering infrastructure for programmable payments, asset tokenization, and near-instant settlement for institutional clients.

The platform enables financial institutions and corporations to move funds more efficiently by using blockchain technology to reduce settlement delays and improve transaction transparency.

As more banks explore tokenized payments and digital asset infrastructure, Kinexys has emerged as one of the leading blockchain platforms serving the institutional financial sector.

South Korea Accelerates Blockchain Payment Innovation

KB Kookmin is not the only South Korean financial company investing in blockchain-based payment solutions.

In April, payment service provider NHN KCP signed a memorandum of understanding with Ava Labs to develop a payments-focused Layer 1 blockchain network, highlighting the country's growing investment in blockchain infrastructure for financial services.

The increasing adoption of blockchain by banks and payment providers signals a broader shift toward modernizing global payment systems, with institutions seeking faster settlements, lower costs, and greater operational efficiency through distributed ledger technology.
