Dogecoin Gets Smart Contracts as DogeOS Opens Public Testnet

DogeOS opens its public testnet for EVM-compatible Dogecoin applications, with DOGE gas fees and a proposed upgrade for native ZK-proof verification.

Dogecoin Gets Smart Contracts as DogeOS Opens Public Testnet

TL;DR

  • DogeOS launched a public testnet designed to bring EVM-compatible smart contracts to Dogecoin.

  • DOGE serves as the native transaction-fee token, with planned applications spanning DeFi, prediction markets, and games.

  • The current security model uses validators, a trusted execution environment, and a permissioned sequencer.

  • Dogecoin does not directly verify DogeOS’s zero-knowledge proofs; a proposed Core upgrade would enable that capability.

DogeOS has opened its public testnet, giving developers a live environment to build applications intended to expand Dogecoin beyond payments and trading.

Launched Wednesday, the application layer is designed as a zero-knowledge rollup with Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility. DOGE serves as its native token for transaction fees.

The project aims to support trading, lending, stablecoins, prediction markets and games. However, its current security architecture relies on additional infrastructure because Dogecoin itself does not yet verify the rollup’s execution proofs.

Testnet Opens Dogecoin to Smart-Contract Developers

DogeOS is intended to bring EVM-compatible smart contracts to the Dogecoin ecosystem.

EVM compatibility allows developers familiar with Ethereum-style applications to work with a familiar execution environment. The project’s use of DOGE for fees connects that application activity to Dogecoin’s native asset.

The public testnet provides a place to develop applications, test transactions, and assess how the infrastructure performs before a production launch.

DogeOS CEO Jordan Jefferson told The Block that the team is concentrating on giving developers time to build while it validates the network.

He did not announce a mainnet date, saying the team would share its timeline as it reaches further development milestones.

DogeOS is designed to settle its state to Dogecoin, but the underlying blockchain does not currently verify its zero-knowledge proofs directly.

Jefferson said bridge state transitions require valid proofs alongside signatures from a majority of the validator set and a trusted execution environment signer.

The network also uses a permissioned sequencer. That means transaction sequencing is controlled through an authorized operator structure rather than being openly available to any participant.

These components are important to understanding the testnet’s security model. The use of zero-knowledge proofs does not, by itself, mean Dogecoin miners independently verify every DogeOS execution result.

For now, validators and trusted execution infrastructure remain part of the system’s operation.

Proposed Dogecoin Upgrade Would Enable Proof Verification

The DogeOS team submitted a proposed Dogecoin Core upgrade in July 2025 that would add native zero-knowledge-proof verification.

If implemented, that capability would allow Dogecoin miners to verify DogeOS execution proofs directly.

The proposal has not yet been implemented, so the current testnet should be assessed using its existing architecture rather than the planned verification model.

Its eventual adoption would represent a change in how Dogecoin can evaluate activity from the application layer. The supplied announcement does not provide a confirmed implementation schedule.

DogeOS comes from the team behind the MyDoge wallet. It announced a $6.9 million funding round led by Polychain Capital in May 2025.

Jefferson previously said the project’s goal was to expand Dogecoin’s ecosystem beyond its historical reliance on attention from Elon Musk.

The testnet makes that ambition more concrete by offering developers infrastructure on which to build and test products.

Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing welcomed the launch, expressing hope that DogeOS could encourage new utility-focused development and attract startups to the network.

Those ambitions remain dependent on developer participation, usable applications and progress toward mainnet.

Mainnet Timing Remains Open

The immediate focus is testing the network and supporting application development.

A public testnet marks a development milestone, but it does not establish that production deployment is ready or that the proposed Dogecoin Core changes will be adopted.

At the time of the source report, DOGE traded around $0.094, down approximately 60% over the previous year.

For DogeOS, the next practical tests are whether developers build useful applications and whether the network performs reliably under broader participation. The team has tied further mainnet announcements to its progress through those milestones.
