Cardano Foundation launches Veridian, a digital identity spin-out with tokenized shares, a live mobile wallet, and technology for verifying AI agents.

Cardano Foundation Spins Off Veridian to Verify AI Agents' Identity

TL;DR

  • The Cardano Foundation has launched Veridian as an independent commercial company led by CEO Thomas A. Mayfield.

  • Veridian develops infrastructure to verify identities and authority without relying on a central identity database.

  • Its shares have been tokenized on Cardano as ledger-based securities under Switzerland’s DLT Act.

  • The company plans to seek strategic partners and investors in 2027 to support international expansion and AI agent verification.

The Cardano Foundation has launched Veridian, an independent commercial spin-out focused on digital identity and verifiable authority for people, organizations, and AI agents.

Led by CEO Thomas A. Mayfield, the company aims to help participants in digital interactions establish who they are dealing with and what that party is authorized to do.

The launch follows three years of development within the Swiss-based nonprofit foundation. Veridian will now pursue government and enterprise customers as a separate business.

Veridian Targets Identity Fraud and AI Authorization

Veridian’s infrastructure is designed to provide credentials that can be verified and revoked without maintaining a central identity database vulnerable to breaches or surveillance.

Mayfield said the absence of an identity layer on the internet has become more consequential as AI agents move money and data on behalf of people and businesses.

Those activities include payments, stablecoin transfers, and trades, where counterparties need a way to check an agent’s authority and withdraw it if the agent is compromised.

The announcement cited Javelin Strategy & Research figures putting U.S. consumer losses from identity fraud at $27.3 billion in 2025, illustrating the scale of the problem Veridian seeks to address.

Veridian’s shares have been natively tokenized as ledger-based securities under Switzerland’s DLT Act, according to the announcement.

The issuance uses the programmable token standard developed by the Cardano Foundation and the Cardano community. The foundation described Veridian’s shares as the first such asset deployed on Cardano.

The company plans to seek strategic partners and investors in 2027. It intends to expand its U.S. operations to serve state government demand, develop its European enterprise business, grow its issuer network in Asia-Pacific, and advance verifiable authority for AI agents.

The announcement did not disclose a fundraising target or investment terms.

Mobile Wallet Is Live as Veridian Pursues Government Demand

Veridian is built on KERI and ACDC, open identity standards that the company says are already recognized by regulators.

Chief Technology Officer Fergal O’Connor is a maintainer of the core libraries supporting both standards.

The Veridian Wallet is available on iOS and Android. The company also said it has mapped all 142 requirements in Utah’s State-Endorsed Digital Identity implementation guide.

According to the announcement, Utah became the first U.S. state to pass SEDI legislation in 2026 through SB 275, requiring privacy-preserving identity controlled by individuals. More than ten other states are observing the model.

Veridian’s mapping work supports its government-market ambitions, although the announcement did not identify a state deployment contract.

Veridian’s technology is already used by Masumi, the Cardano-based AI agent payment and identity network developed by Serviceplan Group and NMKR.

The integration gives agents a verifiable identity that counterparties can check before a payment takes place. That identity can also be revoked if an agent is compromised.

The use case connects identity verification with financial activity, making authorization part of the interaction rather than relying solely on an agent’s ability to initiate a transaction.

Cardano Foundation Maintains Board Involvement

Cardano Foundation CEO Frederik Gregaard will chair Veridian. He and the foundation’s chief legal officer, Nicolas Jacquemart, have joined its board.

“This is a milestone for the Cardano ecosystem. Veridian is built on open standards; it has a product in the market, and it is solving a problem that governments are now writing into law. The Foundation invested three years in getting it here. Spinning it out gives Veridian the independence to move at the speed its market demands, while we keep building together, including bringing verifiable identity natively to Cardano,” Gregaard stated.

That work includes plans to bring verifiable identity natively to Cardano, linking Veridian’s commercial development with the ecosystem’s broader infrastructure efforts.
