Aptos Labs has introduced a passkey authenticator for transactions on its blockchain, eliminating the need for passwords.

TL;DR

  • Aptos Labs has implemented a passwordless passkey authentication method for signing transactions on its network.

  • This innovation is designed to make it easier for users to carry out transactions on the blockchain.

Aptos Labs Launches Passkey Authentication for Transactions

Aptos Labs, the development team behind the Aptos blockchain, has launched a new way for users to sign transactions on its network. The team has implemented passkey authentication, eliminating the need for setting up passwords.

While speaking with The Block, Avery Ching, co-founder and CTO of Aptos Labs, revealed that,

"We have made changes on the blockchain and created a novel passkey authenticator on Aptos that will take a transaction, the passkey signature, the passkey public key, and validate the transaction with that information. This effectively enables a user to sign transactions with their passkey."

At the moment, users are required to keep their private keys safe after they create an account in a crypto wallet. The private key is encrypted with a password set by the user. Forgetting the password means that the user will lose access to the wallet and the assets within unless the key is safely stored elsewhere.

However, with a passkey, users can now log in to their wallets without passwords. The passkeys can be Touch ID or Face ID.

Ching added that passkeys are more user-friendly. He added that,

"Users will be able to store the private key for a passkey account directly on their device and sync their private key with their backup provider (e.g., iCloud or Google Password Manager). Then, when they want to sign a transaction, they can use the passkey directly to do so, rather than sending the request to a service to be signed."

The launch of the Aptos passkey authenticator comes after the community deliberated on the matter early last year. At the moment, the authenticator is only implemented for the Aptos ecosystem but Ching added that authenticator

APT, Aptos’ native coin, is up by more than 3% in the last 24 hours and is now trading at $9.40 per coin.
