World launches ProveKit, an open-source toolkit that generates private identity proofs on phones and browsers without exposing personal data.

World ID Lets Users Prove Age or Identity Without Sharing Data

World has introduced ProveKit, a production-ready zero-knowledge proving toolkit that allows users to generate cryptographic proofs directly on their phones and browsers.

Already integrated into World ID, ProveKit powers privacy-focused features that let individuals verify specific information without disclosing the personal data behind it.

Proving Identity Claims Without Exposing Personal Data

In a press release shared with Cryptowisser, World revealed that ProveKit enables users to prove claims such as their age, nationality, residency, or ownership of a valid identity document.

Instead of sharing the underlying document or personal details, the user’s device generates a cryptographic proof. The verifier receives only confirmation that the specified requirement has been met.

For example, a person could prove that they exceed a minimum age without revealing their name, date of birth, or identity document number.

ProveKit is designed to operate on standard consumer hardware, including smartphones and web browsers.

According to World’s benchmarks, the toolkit can generate proofs within seconds on a typical phone. A low-end test device completed the process in less than 30 seconds.

The system operates with limited memory and can also work offline, extending its potential use to devices and locations with unreliable internet connectivity.

Because proofs are created locally, users do not need to send sensitive personal information to third-party servers for processing. This architecture reduces potential exposure and gives individuals greater control over their data.

The toolkit targets 128-bit post-quantum security and does not require a trusted setup—a process in which secret parameters must be generated and securely destroyed before a cryptographic system launches.

ProveKit uses WHIR, a hash-based polynomial commitment scheme. Its code is publicly available and has undergone an independent security audit by Least Authority.

The open-source approach allows developers and security researchers to inspect the implementation and identify potential vulnerabilities.

Noir Support Opens ProveKit to Developers

ProveKit supports Noir, Aztec’s Rust-inspired programming language for building zero-knowledge applications.

Developers can use Noir to define new provable claims and distribute them without embedding every claim directly inside an application bundle. This could make it easier to introduce new verification requirements without requiring a full application update.

Within World ID, ProveKit can support privacy-preserving checks involving age, nationality, residency, and identity-document ownership.

World ID Credentials can store information collected from NFC-enabled identity documents locally on the user’s device. World says this information remains inaccessible to World Foundation, Tools for Humanity, and other third parties.

This local-storage model, combined with on-device proof generation, is intended to minimize how much personal information users must disclose when verifying their eligibility or identity attributes.

ProveKit v2 Promises Faster and Smaller Proofs

ProveKit v1 is production-ready and available as an open-source codebase. Users and developers can explore the technology at provekit.org.

World is also developing ProveKit v2. The next version is expected to reduce proof sizes, generation times, and memory requirements while supporting more efficient verification on blockchain networks.
