New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the formation of a digital assets advisory council during Tuesday's inaugural NYC Crypto Summit, reinforcing his commitment to position Manhattan as a global cryptocurrency hub. The initiative aims to attract fintech investment and innovation while exploring practical blockchain applications for municipal services.
"My goal remains the same as it was day-one as mayor, making New York City the crypto capital of the globe," Adams declared to summit attendees. The mayor indicated that the council's chairperson and initial policy recommendations would be announced in the coming weeks, marking a significant step in the city's blockchain strategy.
Blockchain Applications Target Vital Records Management
Adams emphasized that his administration's interest in blockchain technology extends beyond financial applications. "This is not about chasing memes or trends," he stated. "We want to use the technology of tomorrow to better serve New Yorkers today."
The mayor highlighted the potential for blockchain to transform how the city manages sensitive information, particularly vital records such as birth certificates and death records. "We're also looking at the power of blockchain and how it can be used to manage sensitive information, like our vital records," Adams explained, noting that such documents could remain both private and easily accessible to families.
New York City Chief Technology Officer Matthew Fraser reinforced this vision, pointing to financial inclusion as another priority area. Fraser suggested that future pilot programs might enable unbanked residents to use cryptocurrency for paying city services.
Mayor Seeks "Visionaries" for Municipal Crypto Integration
Comparing himself to Star Trek's Captain Kirk exploring new frontiers, Adams expressed his search for a "Spock" and other forward-thinking experts to join the advisory council. Throughout the summit, he emphasized his administration's commitment to integrating blockchain technology into everyday municipal operations.
Following the mayor's remarks, attendees participated in facilitated brainstorming sessions to identify opportunities and challenges in implementing blockchain solutions. The most promising ideas are expected to receive formal endorsement from the mayor's office.
Adams, who earned the nickname "Bitcoin Mayor" after converting his first three paychecks into Bitcoin and Ethereum in 2022, offered encouragement to industry participants who had weathered regulatory challenges. "You were harassed, you were demonized. You were treated as though you were the enemy," he acknowledged. "But you withstood it. Your resiliency is admirable, and it will all pay off, because everyone is going to come around."
His continued public support for digital assets has reinforced New York's ambitions to lead in the sector despite the competitive landscape among major financial centers.
