BitMart is considering a restructuring plan that may include creditor distributions and a phased restart after announcing plans to shut down its exchange.

BitMart Weighs Restart of Some Operations to Repay Creditors

TL;DR

  • BitMart is considering a restructuring plan that could include creditor distributions and a phased restart of certain operations.

  • The cryptocurrency exchange appointed White & Case as restructuring counsel and expects to provide a roadmap by September 9.

  • Its July 26 closure announcement did not mention creditors or identify a specific reason for the shutdown.

  • BitMart previously set August 26 as the deadline for trading to end, with full platform operations scheduled to cease on January 31, 2027.

BitMart Explores Restructuring After Closure Announcement

Cryptocurrency exchange BitMart is considering a restructuring plan that could allow certain services to resume while providing distributions to creditors.

The announcement comes less than four weeks after the company said it would wind down operations following nine years in the cryptocurrency industry.

“The potential plan may include the phased resumption of certain operations in an orderly manner alongside distributions to creditors,” BitMart said in an official announcement.

The exchange has not specified which services could restart or how creditor distributions would be structured. BitMart said it expects to provide a more detailed roadmap by September 9.

BitMart appointed law firm White & Case to advise on its restructuring process. The firm’s involvement indicates that the exchange is evaluating its obligations and potential options for reorganizing its operations.

However, BitMart has not disclosed whether it intends to pursue a formal insolvency proceeding or another restructuring arrangement.

The company also has not identified its creditors, disclosed the size of its liabilities or explained how customer balances would be treated under the potential plan.

Further details are expected when the exchange publishes its restructuring roadmap.

Creditor Reference Marks Shift in Public Messaging

BitMart’s mention of creditor distributions marks a notable change from its earlier explanation for shutting down.

In its July 26 closure notice, the exchange attributed the decision to operating conditions, the market environment and its future strategy.

The original announcement did not mention creditors, outstanding liabilities or a specific financial problem.

The updated language suggests the restructuring process could involve financial claims against the company, although BitMart has not clarified the nature or extent of those obligations.

After announcing its closure, BitMart halted new user registrations, deposits, and trading orders.

The exchange also moved futures accounts into reduce-only mode, allowing users to decrease or close existing positions without opening new ones.

BitMart set August 26 as the deadline for all trading activity to end. It previously planned to terminate platform operations entirely on January 31, 2027, while continuing to allow withdrawals subject to additional compliance checks.

The company has not said whether its restructuring discussions will alter those deadlines or affect withdrawal availability.

The proposed restructuring introduces the possibility that parts of BitMart’s business could continue operating, but uncertainty remains over creditor recoveries, customer access and the exchange’s longer-term future.
