Bitcoin Remains Resilient as Geopolitical Risks Intensify
Bitcoin held close above $78,000 during the London trading on Monday as renewed geopolitical tensions pushed oil prices higher and weighed on stocks and gold.
The largest cryptocurrency traded around $78,050 after remaining mostly unchanged since midnight UTC. Its stability contrasted with declines across several traditional financial markets.
The latest price action extends a pattern seen throughout August, during which Bitcoin has repeatedly demonstrated resilience during periods of geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty.
While BTC remained steady, other major cryptocurrencies recorded modest losses. XRP declined approximately 2.5%, while Solana fell 2.3%.
US-Iran Conflict Sends Oil Prices Higher
Oil prices rose on both sides of the Atlantic following a U.S. attack on an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran responded with retaliatory action, adding to concerns about oil supplies through one of the world’s most important tanker routes. Shipping through the strait has faced disruptions since the conflict began six months ago.
West Texas Intermediate crude futures advanced nearly 2% to $85.10 per barrel, while Brent crude gained 1.9% to $92.39, according to TradingView data.
The gains reflected concerns that further escalation could disrupt energy shipments and restrict global oil supplies.
Higher oil prices may also intensify inflationary pressure by increasing transportation and production costs, potentially complicating the Federal Reserve’s monetary-policy outlook.
Traditional risk and haven assets struggled as investors reacted to the escalating conflict.
Gold fell 0.8% to approximately $4,418 per ounce, while futures linked to the Nasdaq declined 0.5%. Major Asian equity markets also traded lower.
Bitcoin’s relative stability suggests that investors are increasingly treating the cryptocurrency as a potential alternative during periods of geopolitical stress. However, its ability to retain that role will depend on whether it continues holding key technical support levels.
BTC has gained approximately 23% in August. By comparison, gold has risen 9%, while the Nasdaq has advanced around 4% over the same period.
ETF Inflows Support Bitcoin’s Monthly Rally
Strong demand for U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds may be contributing to the cryptocurrency’s outperformance.
Spot ETFs provide institutional and traditional investors with regulated exposure to Bitcoin without requiring them to hold the asset directly. Sustained inflows can create additional buying pressure in the underlying market.
Expectations of increased Federal Reserve intervention have also supported Bitcoin. Investors have been assessing the potential implications of the U.S. Treasury’s expanded bond-buyback program and whether it could encourage the central bank to provide more liquidity.
However, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s latest comments have complicated those expectations.
During a speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday, Warsh warned that inflation had not been sufficiently contained.
The Fed chair argued that financial conditions were not restrictive and said recent progress on inflation did not yet indicate a meaningful improvement in underlying price pressures.
His comments prompted traders to increase their expectations for further monetary tightening.
Markets now assign a 58% probability to an interest-rate increase in September and are pricing in approximately 1.5 hikes before the end of the year, according to Lloyd Chan, an FX strategist at MUFG.
Higher interest rates typically pressure risk assets by increasing borrowing costs and strengthening the appeal of yield-generating instruments. They can also reduce market liquidity, creating a more difficult environment for cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin’s stability despite the hawkish repricing may therefore reinforce the argument that its August rally has stronger underlying support.
Bitcoin Approaches Major Resistance Zone
Despite BTC’s recent strength, market observers continue to advise caution as geopolitical and monetary-policy risks remain elevated.
Vikram Subbaraj, CEO of Indian crypto exchange Giottus, said investors should avoid excessive leverage while macroeconomic conditions remain uncertain. He recommended staggered entries and smaller positions to reduce exposure to sudden volatility.
Bitcoin has immediate support near $77,000. A sustained decline below that level could weaken the short-term outlook and expose BTC to a deeper pullback.
On the upside, the zone between $79,400 and $80,800 remains the main resistance area. A decisive move above that range could strengthen bullish momentum and open the door to further gains.
Traders are also preparing for the September 4 U.S. employment report, which could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision.
