Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) is fast becoming a major player in the digital economy ecosystem. This is evident in its latest partnership.
Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) and Cumberland DRW have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a multi-year strategic partnership to support Bhutan’s long-term vision for a sustainable, innovation-driven digital economy.
In a press release shared with Cryptowisser, the team said the partnership supports the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City, a new economic hub designed to attract global talent, advance technology responsibly, and catalyze inclusive economic growth aligned with Bhutan’s values.
Bhutan and Cumberland DRW to Develop a Modern Digital Asset Ecosystem
Thanks to the MoU, Bhutan and Cumberland DRW, a global leader in digital asset trading, intend to collaborate on the development of a modern digital asset ecosystem and the financial infrastructure required to support it.
GMC added that the areas of partnership include next-generation digital asset frameworks, sustainable digital asset mining, and AI compute, yield-generation opportunities related to Bhutan’s digital assets. It also includes the development of a scalable national stablecoin infrastructure.
The partnership will also focus on talent development and the strengthening of institutional capabilities to support long-term resilience and economic diversification.
According to GMC, Green Digital Ltd, a Gelephu Mindfulness City entity, is leading the initiative in Bhutan.
This latest development comes as Bhutan has been expanding its presence in the digital economy. Last week, Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) announced that it has launched TER, a physical gold-backed digital token issued with the sovereign backing of the Kingdom of Bhutan.
In October, the Kingdom of Bhutan announced that it was transitioning its national digital identity system to the Ethereum blockchain, marking a significant advancement in the country's adoption of decentralized technology. The migration, which affects nearly 800,000 residents, will enable citizens to verify their identities and access government services through a self-sovereign ID system built on Ethereum's infrastructure.
In May, the Kingdom of Bhutan also established a strategic partnership with Binance Pay and DK Bank to implement the world's first government-backed cryptocurrency tourism payment ecosystem.
While commenting on the partnership, Gelay Jamtsho, Chairman of Green Digital Ltd, stated that,
“By partnering with Cumberland, GDL is connecting Bhutan’s green, renewable-energy-driven infrastructure with world-class digital asset liquidity. From Gelephu Mindfulness City, we are committed to building a responsible, well-governed digital asset hub that supports Bhutan’s broader sustainable development and diversification agenda.”
Donald R. Wilson, Founder of DRW, added that,
“Bhutan’s clarity of vision and emphasis on sustainable development make it a natural partner for responsible and forward-looking innovation. We are honored to support Bhutan as it builds the foundations of a modern digital economy.”
Cumberland is the digital asset arm of DRW and a pioneer in the cryptoasset markets since 2014. Combining DRW’s decades of trading and technology leadership with purpose-built digital asset infrastructure, Cumberland provides deep, reliable liquidity and sophisticated execution solutions across global spot and derivatives markets.
Meanwhile, the Gelephu Mindfulness City Special Administrative Region is a visionary initiative creating a world-class economic hub in southern Bhutan, centered on mindfulness, sustainability, and innovation.
