“We, unfortunately, will be retiring the program in April of this year — All Shift Cards will officially be deactivated on April 11, 2019.”

A common argument for regular money (also known as fiat currency) as opposed to cryptocurrency is that you can’t use cryptocurrency to buy groceries and other everyday items. Well, through the use of a cryptocurrency debit card, you can. This is a review of Shift Card, one of the crypto debit cards out there.

Shift Card primarily supports Bitcoin. However, the card will most likely support even more cryptocurrencies in the future.

With respect to fiat currencies, Shift Card supports USD.

Shift Card is a VISA-card. You can connect it to an account with Coinbase. By doing so, you can spend any cryptocurrencies held on Coinbase at close to 40 million different merchant locations.

US-investors may also use this card.

Shift Card’s fees consist of an issuance fee, a fixed fee for ATM usage and a spending fee (no monthly fee).

The issuance fee is USD 20.00.

The fixed fee for ATM-usage is USD 2.50 per withdrawal (USD 3.50 for international ATM-withdrawals).

The spending fee is 0.00% of the purchase (but 3.00% for international transactions).

We think that Shift Card charges relatively competitive fees. The fees are as set out in the below picture:

Shift Card Fees

There is an issuance fee set to USD 10.00. This is somewhat lower than the industry average which is arguably around USD 15.00.

There is no monthly fee and any ATM-usage results in a fixed fee of USD 2.50 (plus any additional fees charged by ATM operators). International ATM-withdrawals are USD 1.00 more expensive, i.e. USD 3.50 fixed fee per withdrawal. Fixed fee for withdrawals might be disadvantageous in countries where the normal ATM-machines only allow smaller withdrawals (USD 20 for instance). In such scenarios, in order to withdraw a larger amount you need to withdraw several times, thus triggering the fixed fee each time.

Furthermore, the most important fee of them all, is the commission on spending. Shift Card sets you back 3.00% with respect to international transactions. This means that if you buy a nice sweater (any place other than in the USA) for USD 100, this will reduce your crypto assets with USD 103. When purchasing the same sweater in USA, however, no additional charge is made on the purchase.

We have not found any information on the maximum deposit limits. Accordingly, if the deposit limits are important to you we urge you to do your own analysis and form your own opinion on this.

Finally, if this is the card for you, congrats.
